Steam Incident leaves No One Steaming

This morning I set out installing SteamOS on my desktop computer 1. That turned out instructive and satisfying, though not in the way first intended.

My desktop is a dualboot system running Windows and Linux on separate SSDs, with an extra hard drives for storage, and while I use Windows as my daily driver (even using virtualization t´when I need Linux for work or education purposes), there are enough situations where being able to boot into another operating system is useful. Linux Mint is my distribution of choice and since I had v17 installed and wanted to upgrade to version 18 anyway it was not a big issue to use replace it with another distribution as experiment.

So I went ahead – downloaded the SteamOS installer and loaded it unto a USB stick and then shutdown the PC to do what one should always do when installing a new OS: Disconnect all hard disks except the installation target. After this basic precaution it was all a matter of opening the bootmenu, select USB and follow the instructions inside the installer. Straightforward, though a bit quirky compared to the installers of distributions like Mint or Fedora, but SteamOS is in beta and probably also more intended for products like Valve’s own Steambox than DIY projects like mine. Still, I made it through and up with one running Steam machine.

That’s where trouble started, because I couldn’t get SteamOS to place nice with my usual dual-boot setup (otherwise easily managed with EasyBCD). However, since SteamOS installs it self in EFI mode, it wouldn’t play nice and frustrating troubleshooting followed. it was also time for breakfast and for me to close the box, and let it be reminder to not do things on an empty stomach that at this time I tried a fresh installation of SteamOS with all drives connected. I carefully selected the right drive for installation and once more SteamOs installed. However, gone was my Windows installation too. Initially I suspected a corrupted bootloader and tried out the repair utilities on my Windows installation disk, but to no prevail and the disk appeared to be dead (it has happened to an SSD of mine before, so OK, stuff happens). My last troubleshooting step was to boot into Linux from a live DVD and that’s when I saw it and understood. Regardless how careful I was when I selected which disk to install on, the SteamOS installer had still applied the same partition scheme to my Windows disk as on my Linux disk, but without installing. Thankfully not to my data disks though, although given that I have a double cloud backup of my data, the worst thing would have been waiting for data to be downloaded and restored.

Reinstalling Windows then took only a couple of hours until I was up and running with most of my standard software (how online installation files and fast internet changes things! )

Looking back, on the one hand side I feel a bit silly for not taking the basic precaution of disconnecting all hard drives before installing a new OS; however, I am almost cheerful (perhaps even smug) to see how having proper backup would leave me safe in a not-quite worst case scenario, and how my basic rules of keeping OS and data on separate disks kept me safe (I have broken that rule once in 23 years, which is also the number of times a system disk has failed – coincidence? Murphy says “no”)

I probably got rid of a few unnecessary applications at the same time,got my start menu sorted and upgraded to Mint 18 as planned anyway, so no issue there. I also got to know EFI and I understand why some communities are concerned about it.

Finally, my wife always tells me that reinstalling an OS once in a while seems to make me happy. Having written this I believe she is right. Of course she is…

 

Smartphone Delight

Update May 7: Battery and Charging added

I suppose my previous post about smartphone X-excitement was a bit disillusioned in its tone – I must have grown tired from seeing to many spec sheets and comparison tables. At least I also mentioned how this is an opportunity to discuss other qualities of phone – some that aren’t measurable in Hz or ppi and where more is better, but also some that are a matter of personal preference and qualities that are mutually exclusive.

The Kano model

A framework to understand this is the Kano model, which describes how the desirability of a product depends on its features. Features are divided into

  • basic, must-have qualities
  • performance attributes (more is better)
  • attractive features that, while not being must-haves, makes the product more attractive (“delighters”)

A key point to this is that over time what starts out as a delighter, becomes a performance attribute and eventually a basic attribute.

For example, there was a time when just having a display was a great delighter, whereas it is now a basic feature, with the resolution being a performance attribute and screen size being a strange delighter, with small, medium and large size being important to different people. Last week I read a review where the reviewer wondered how it was possible to put anything but an AMOLED display on a flagship phone in 2016, thus moving the screen technology from being a delighter to a basic feature. I  am not sure I agree, but time marches on.

My spec-tiredness probably comes down to the fact that most of the attributes that can be listed in a spec sheet are now basic or performance features.

Delighters

More interesting are the delighters. Not only because this is where innovation takes place and the source of feeling good about the devices comes from, but also because this is where choices must be made, compromises are needed and where great engineering moves the bar for what can be achieved within tight constraints.

For example, the larger the screen, the more stuff can be crammed into the device, but that also means that it is heavier and while a bigger battery is available, the load will be bigger and life shorter.

Or consider the material of the casing: Plastic, glass, metal are all options. Plastic is lighter, robust and allows wireless charging; but may be considered cheap-feeling, whereas metal is heavier, feels great but doesn’t work with wireless chargers (yet – maybe clever engineering will one day cheat Faraday’s law)

Below is what came out of my delighter-brainstorm.

Hardware

  • Battery: How long the phone will run on full charge depends on how it is used, what apps are running, what network is available and many other things. But all things being equal, the battery capacity matters: More is more, more is bigger, more is heavier. It also matters how energy-efficient the rest of the hardware is – some models can run long on a smaller charge.
  • Charging: Phones are usually charged through a cable, but wireless charging is an option too. Quick charging may be an option, and USB C is introduced a third option.
  • Camera: “The best camera is the one you carry” , so if you care about the pictures you take, then the phone’s camera matters, with several delighter features. RAW output? 4K video? image stabilization? Noise and low-light performance? That is just some of the things to look for in a camera.
  • Dual SIM: Useful if you commute between countries, handle work and private matters on the same phone, if different carriers covers the areas in which you roam of if separate phone/data carriers.
  • Ergonomics: How well can you hold the device? Should it be possible to operate with one hand. For example, if you often use the phone while standing in a train (I do), then having a good grip is a must.
  • IR blaster: Makes the phone act as a an extra remote control. So, if all you need to do is turn off the TV, you just reach for you phone instead of having to search through sofas etc.
  • Loud speakers: Some phones have great speakers allowing you to listen to music or play games without heard phones. Such a phone can also act as an ad hoc conference phone, which can quite useful.
  • Materials (Metal/Glass/Plastic body): As said above: All are options. Plastic is lighter, robust and allows wireless charging; but may be considered cheap-feeling, whereas metal is heavier, feels great but doesn’t work with wireless chargers.
  • Music: Listening to music on a phone means using either a 3.5 mm headphone jack connection or something wireless. When you use the 3.5 mm connection you rely on the DAC in the phone to convert the digital signal from your music source to the analog waveform coming out of the headphone. The DAC may or may not be good, so it is worth looking for if you use the phone for music.
  • Network support: Different carriers in different countries use different frequency bands for phone communication. A phone doesn’t necessarily get full support.
  • One-handed operation: Must it be possible to operate the device one handedly, for example while standing up in a bus?
  • Screen quality: Apart from the resolution, things to consider is brightness and readability in sunlight (including how fast the display adapts to changes in light) and viewing angles. I recently bought a tablet with a 10.1″ 1280×800 display and was surprised to find the display to be markedly worse than a similar resolution display on a 4 year old tablet, so it is worth seeing the device live before buying.
  • SD-card (removable storage), if supported it gives extra space for pictures and video
  • Size: With a big screen he phone can act as a e-book reader (Amazon’s kindle has a 6 inch screen with 300 ppi; large smart phones seem to top out at 5.5 inch, with 550 ppi), enable basic word processing and be more useful for webbrowsing,; with a smaller screen the device is easier to use one-handed, fit in a pocket. The list of pros and cons for bigger vs. smaller screen is long and what is optimal size is a matter of personal needs.
  • Storage: Many models come in with different options for internal storage (RAM). Sometimes 64 GB or more, sometimes 16 GB or less. Apps and games can eat this space up fast, as can shooting pictures and especially video if it is stored internally.
  • Water/Dust tight: Newer devices are certified to endure some degree of dust and moisture, ranging from sweaty palms to being submerged for up to 30 minutes

Software and App Selection

The hardware makes the device a phone, the software makes it smart. Again it is not just a matter of the more the better, rather there are pros and cons to different features.

  • App selection: Some phone brands have lots of high-quality apps and games available, while others may not even have basic apps available. As we become and more reliant on smartphones, e.g., for paying in stores or holding tickets and boarding cars payment, some niche apps may be must haves and effectively disqualify a device in an entire market. For example, in Denmark MobilePay has become extremely popular when transferring money between people, replacing means disappointed customers buying from your competitor next time.Flexibility/complexity: A device can nice and simple to set up if you agree with the designer’s choices. Otherwise, the more configuration options you get, the more complex the device becomes and the greater the risk of something going wrong in a way you don’t know how to revert (however, it follows from Murphy’s Law that if you can break something, then somebody else probably did so already or will soon do so, and the solution is only a Google search away).
  • The operating system on an Android phone can be customized greatly by the manufacturer, sometimes for branding purposes, sometimes very likely imitating another brand on purpose. Aesthetics aside, this is  a cause of the fragmentation of Android, which to some a big problem, to other the very thing making the brand attractive because it enables choice. A definite drawback, though, is that maintenance if different varieties generally is bad, with devices not receiving regular security updates and not even the big version updates. Few devices are  supported after two years.
  • Unlocked vs. carrier branded, most careers will sell you the phone at a lower price, subsidizing through the plan. They may also add extra software – maybe to differentiate themselves and to offer better experience than other carriers, probably always to open new ways to make you better customer by buying more services or becoming deeper entrenched in their ecosystem. Alternatively one may buy a phone at full price, have a cheaper plan and less carrier bloatware.
  • Updates and Security: How often a device receives updates depends on the manufacturer. Some will send out monthly updates, others never do it.

Other factors

  • Branding may be the thing that matters to some, always buying devices from XYZ because they are from XYZ.
  • Cost: It doesn’t matter how great hardware and software is if you can’t afford the thing.

Last Words

Looking at the lists  above, there is plenty of options for diversification and one can be delighted regardless of preference.  It is not as if it  is possible to create the perfect product, because some features are mutually exclusive and constraints are imposed by cost, size, battery etc. It is a great time to be consumer since there are plenty of options if one takes the time to look past simple  spec listings.

Smartphone X-excitement

Spring has taken hold, with all longer days and the useful spring stuff happening: singing birds, blooming flowers and the first mowing of the lawn coming up.

That also means that the prime season of Android phone enthusiasts is coming to an end. The big trade shows CES and MWC are long over and most of the key players have announced their 2016 lineup. The only one waiting is HTC, who will (I hope) confirm the leaks and their own Twitter hype this Tuesday Apr 12. I have been looking forward  to this, since my current phone is up for replacement and I am particularly fond of their products. Of course, with all the leaks there isn’t  much left to be surprised about – the  only thing I still feel I need to know is whether there the camera has OIS or similar functionality.

Other than that (i.e. some details about the camera) there isn’t much about the specifications that gets me excited at this time. The hardware specs will be pretty much the same as all the other phones in that tier, since they all use the same components: The SoC will be from Qualcomm, the camera from Sony, the screen from either LG or Samsung. Gone are the days where the decision which model to buy could be made looking at specs alone; so if you don’t buy into marketing stuff of “life companion“-ship and  “Life is good when you play more“, then event’s aren’t really interesting. It is only when you hold the device in your hand that you Know.

I think it is a good thing, because it means that focus can shift away from tweaking specs and over to something that actually make a difference in every day us like ergonomics, call quality and battery life (and camera features, although the cameras on most new phones is probably good enough for most purposes, unless you are one of those who must have RAW images, and in that case it won’t be as good as the DSLR you want anyway).

Feeling this un-excited I also understand why smart phone sales are starting to decrease. The devices are still getting better, but not better in a way that makes a big difference, and if your current device is good enough, there is little reason to upgrade, except for security updates (or if you did like me and bought a device with less memory and worse camera than last years model had). For example, a relative of mine is happy with his 2011 HTC Sensation, which does everything he needs it to do (calls, calendar, SMS, mail checks and a few simple apps).

It is the same falling trend as seen with tablets and (because we still use our iPad the same way we did when we got them, so why update) and PCs. It is probably not a coincidence that smartphone sales are leveling out now that the specs of the high end phones are comparable to mainstream PCs (2 GHz Quad Core, 4 GB RAM…). After all, they are used for the same purposes, and while hardware architectures may be wildly different, an email client is an email client, and many web pages the same regardless where you view them.

The time has come for something new and shiny to be excited about. Probably Virtual Reality.

In the meantime, it is good to know that the smart phone that I have come to rely on for planning, news and communications is a mature and reliable devices without too many surprises.

– or: Best. Investment. Ever.

I dropped my phone on a hard floor yesterday. Nasty sound and it looked bad too. I didn’t have time to examine it closely right away, so I had good time to think about insurance, Nexus 6P and the One M10 release date; plus feeling silly and clumsy.

However, upon closer examination the screen protector had indeed protected the screen:

A €25 sheet of plastic saved a €350 device (or whatever it may be worth 2 years after launch), so that’s like 14 times return on investment, earned back in 6 months. Really a good investment, my best ever. Or maybe it was just luck in unluck, like it is when you get pay back on an insurance policy.

Really good is that only the day before yesterday did the screen protector start to get loose in one corner. I thought about removing it right away, but fortunately I didn’t.

I can whole-heartily recommend putting a protector on your phone. It will be as responsive as ever, the inevitable scratches will be in the protector and bad drops may be survived.

The best easy Care for the PC

There are a lot good things you can do for your desktop PC: Give it an SSD or a bit more memory, clean up your desktop or install cloud backup for your dearest files. None of which need to be terribly time consuming or expensive.

A simple vacuum cleaning is even better. Turn off the PC, open up the case and clean the filters in front of all the fans. Do the same for the heat sinks on the CPU and the video card, as well as the power supply. Less than 5 minutes work and suddenly it is much more pleasant to sit alongside the machine, because with better airflow through the case comes slower running fans and that means less noise.

I recently cleaned a PC at a relative’s house. It had not been cleaned since 2007 and it sounded like a high-power vacuum cleaner. When I was done, they couldn’t hear it was turned on (the PC got an SSD at the same time and is now ready for many more years of service – no wonder new PCs aren’t selling).
