{"id":2202,"date":"2023-08-14T20:27:55","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T18:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harsmann.com\/site\/?p=2202"},"modified":"2024-03-04T20:30:16","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T19:30:16","slug":"summer-reading-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harsmann.com\/site\/2023\/08\/summer-reading-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer reading 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"break-words \"><span dir=\"ltr\">Weather is getting better, so I will also do a summer book post.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;How Big Things Get Done&#8217; by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner, and &#8216;The Worlds Worst Warships&#8217; by Antony Preston. Both take an interesting, readable and enjoyable look at mega projects and how they succeed or fail. Flyvbjerg and Gardner look forward at how we can do better; Preston&#8217;s view is more historical, but at a complex subject &#8220;&#8230;which encompasses engineering, economics, sociology , and even psychology&#8221;, with outcomes that may be ridiculous, often tragic and sometimes change the path of history.<\/p>\n<p>As an IT manager of people and projects I particularly enjoyed these books because they provide an outside perspective on the challenges I meet in my daily work, including that IT projects aren&#8217;t worse or better than others (actually it depends: Flyvbjerg and Gardner got statistics).<\/p>\n<p>Next up in my reading list in non-fiction must be &#8216;In Search of Stupidity&#8217; by Merrill Chapman which is now out in a 3rd\u00a0edition, with a fresh look at the latest mistakes within technology marketing.<\/p>\n<p><em>This was first <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/allan-harsmann-517762_weather-is-getting-better-so-i-will-also-activity-7096740896775233536-D6K2?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\"><em>posted on LinkedIn<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Weather is getting better, so I will also do a summer book post. &#8216;How Big Things Get Done&#8217; by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner, and &#8216;The Worlds Worst Warships&#8217; by Antony Preston.
